Job Title: Process Development Engineer

Description: LS9 seeks a highly motivated Process Development Engineer to assist senior engineering staff in the design, execution, and scale-up of novel fermentation processes to produce biofuels and chemicals from a variety of biomass sources. The ideal candidate will be experienced in media design and microbial fermentation process development, at both the shake flask and at various bioreactor scales. This hands-on position requires a desire and ability to work as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team, as well as the demonstration of a high degree of flexibility, creativity, and initiative applied to the various duties and aspects of the position. This Engineer will assist in the day-to-day operations in the lab and pilot plant in the development and optimization of new, robust fermentation processes.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Execution and analysis of critical fermentation process development experiments within the scope of the relevant corporate projects and goals. Experiments will be conducted at a variety of scales, ranging from small shake flasks to large bioreactors.
  • Fermentation and analytical equipment and instrumentation operation and basic maintenance
  • Strain purification, propagation and storage under aseptic conditions
  • Evaluation of various strains to support molecular biologists in their strain development/optimization efforts
  • Evaluation and improvement of experimental methods and techniques to increase lab efficiency and productivity
  • Analyze, summarize, and present experimental results to others in the company to expedite the development of our integrated biofuels production process in a collaborative team environment
  • Keep abreast of current literature and the state of the art in fermentation science and their potential application to LS9's internal projects
Qualifications:
  • Masters of Science in Chemical Engineering/Microbiology or related scientific field with 0-3 years of industry experience required, or Bachelor of Science in similar fields with more than 5 years industrial experience.
  • Strong expertise in microbiology methods and understanding of analytical methods
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and team oriented environment
  • Ability to contribute to collaborations that yield new and innovative technologies or provide support in determining cost effective research methodologies and implementations
