Job Title: Senior/Principal Fermentation Engineer/Scientist

Description: LS9 seeks highly motivated Sr./Principal Fermentation Engineer/Scientist to design, execute, and scale-up novel fermentation processes to produce fuels and chemicals from a variety of biomass sources. The ideal candidate will be experienced in media design and microbial fermentation process development, at both the shake flask and various fermentor scales. This hands-on position requires a desire and ability to work as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team, as well as the demonstration of a high degree of flexibility, creativity, and initiative applied to the various duties and aspects of the position.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Execute and analyze critical fermentation process development experiments within the scope of the relevant corporate projects and goals. Experiments will be conducted at a variety of scales, ranging from bench to pilot scale fermentors.
  • A solid understanding of fermentation equipment and analytical instrumentation and relevant scientific/engineering principles.
  • Experience with both rational and statistical design of experiments, the development of fermentation media, culture condition and the principles of experiment design.
  • Participate in the development and definition of representative lab and pilot scale models of industrial scale fermentation processes.
  • Conduct the evaluation of various strains to support molecular biologists in their strain development /optimization efforts.
  • Keep abreast of current literature and the state of the art in fermentation science and their potential application to LS9's internal projects.
  • Continuously develop contributions to the company's intellectual property portfolio, author publications in the scientific literature, and present at industry conferences.
  • Analyze, summarize, and present experimental results to others in the company to expedite the development of our integrated product development process in a collaborative team environment.
  • Assist in the technical process transfer and management of LS9's contract sites.
Qualifications: PhD. in Chemical Engineering/Microbiology or related scientific field. 5+ years of post-doc/industry experience required. B.S. or M.S. level candidates with additional relevant industrial experience will also receive consideration.

Ability to work in a fast paced and team oriented environment. Ability to create new and innovative technologies or provide support in determining cost effective research methodologies and implementations. Excellent verbal/written communication skills are required. Working knowledge of molecular biology and biochemistry is a plus.
