Company: LS9, Inc.
Req #: SF0034CM
Job Location: South San Francisco, CA
Description: A biochemist or bio-organic chemist with extensive experience in enzymology including the isolation, characterization, and engineering of enzymes to support the characterization and engineering of novel enzymes in our biofuels and chemicals programs.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and implement conclusive experiments resulting in the understanding and engineering of the structure and function of enzymes.
  • Design methods and assays for the quantitative evaluation of enzyme catalyzed reactions.
  • When necessary, develop and implement high throughput assays to support gene discovery and evolutionary engineering programs.
  • Evaluate the structure and function of enzymes using state of the of the art computational modeling programs.
  • Manipulate the structure of enzymes using state of the art genetic methodologies supporting rational and evolutionary engineering programs.
  • Contribute to a multi-disciplinary team of scientists on the design and improvement of commercial biological processes for the production of fuels and chemicals.
  • Effective documentation and communication of data, their interpretation, and associated recommendations.
  • As required, train and mentor less experienced employees.
  • Proactively support the creation and protection of LS9 intellectual property.
Qualifications: A PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or related discipline with at least 5 years of research experience is required.

A demonstrated command of enzyme mechanisms, kinetics, and analytical methods for their measurement along with a strong knowledge of enzyme structure function and the computational (modeling) and molecular biology tools associated with their manipulation is highly desired. Additional experience in industry, high-throughput methods, and the rational and evolutionary engineering of enzyme function is desirable. A command of basic statistics, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and a demonstrated ability and desire to work within a dynamic and multidisciplinary team is required.
