LS9 has an active internship program that runs throughout the year. We are looking for talented and motivated students actively pursuing or completing undergraduate or graduate degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Synthetic Biology,and/or Bioinformatics. The program provides a challenging project and mentorship to impart to the intern the opportunity to experience and contribute to the fast paced and innovative environment of an early stage industrial biotechnology company. The internships are paid and last from 3-9 months depending on the project and student schedule.

LS9 seeks a highly motivated Process Development Engineer to work in the Pilot Plant in the design, execution, and scale-up of novel fermentation processes to produce biofuels and chemicals from a variety of biomass sources. The ideal candidate will be experienced in pilot plant or manufacturing operations. This hands-on position requires a desire and ability to work as an integral part of a multidisciplinary team, as well as a high degree of flexibility, creativity, and initiative in conducting various duties and aspects of the position. This Engineer will carry out the day-to-day operations in the pilot plant in the optimization of fermentation processes, establishment of readiness for tech-transfer, process scale up, and production of samples to support various programs.

LS9, an industrial biotechnology company that is developing a portfolio of sustainable fuel and chemical products, seeks an experienced Scientist to join our Synthetic Biology team in support of our fuels and chemicals programs. The successful applicant will be experienced in state of the art in vitro and in vivo DNA manipulations and will be responsible for high-throughput design and construction of synthetic genes, pathways, and microorganisms. 

As a member of the Synthetic Biology competency group, this individual will apply a deep understanding of nucleic acid chemistry, enzymology, and biology to develop and implement technologies to support efficient computational design, automated construction, and evaluation of LS9 microbial catalysts. The individual must thrive on the development and application of practical technologies, have a passion for automation and high-throughput experimentation, and have demonstrated experience in the implementation of these technologies in an industrial setting. LS9, an industrial biotechnology company that is developing a portfolio of sustainable fuel and chemical products, seeks Senior Research Associates/Associate Scientists experienced in state-of-the-art Molecular Biology/Synthetic Biology/Microbiology techniques. The successful candidates will play an integral role in LS9's strain development and improvement efforts. He/she will work in a diverse, multi-disciplined team environment. Frequent interaction with molecular biologists, synthetic biologists, enzymologists, fermentation specialists, analytical chemists and automation scientists is part of the job. The candidate will participate actively in project and functional teams and will be able to work independently, as well as in team settings.

Specific Requirements:

LS9 seeks a highly motivated Senior/Principal Process Engineer to lead the effort of integration of an industrial fermentation process with a variety of first and second generation feedstocks as primary carbon source. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in microbial fermentation process development at various scales, strong knowledge of different industrial feedstocks and their impacts on microorganism metabolism and fermentation performance. Working experience with cellulosic feedstocks is highly desirable. Ability to supervise Junior Process Development engineers yet maintains high level of involvement in daily laboratory work. This position also has the responsibility for coordination of all technical activities on the project. Plans, schedules, conducts, and coordinates assigned R&D and process development work; monitors and reports work progress; track and forecast project cost to meet the requirements of industry partners and government agency.

LS9, an advanced biofuels company in South San Francisco, is looking for a Software Developer who participates in a dynamic interdisciplinary research and development team. The individual will be a key contributor in the design and maintenance of scientific software and laboratory information systems. The successful candidate must be capable of problems solving with a friendly, customer focused attitude. Teamwork and frequent interaction with molecular biologists, enzymologists, analytical scientists, automation scientists, and IT professionals is required. The candidate will also guide the team in specifying and procuring appropriate scientific software, hardware and auxiliary tools. The candidate will participate actively in project teams and interact with multidisciplinary teams and will be able to work independently as well as in team settings. The individual key responsibilities will include: design robust, scalable workflow driven databases to support strain screening; maintain and improve legacy SQL server database; maintain and improve legacy database GUI frontend application in .NET / C#; write clean, maintainable code using current best practices (source control, unit testing, continuous integration, design patterns, etc.); use RAD methodology to communicate closely with end users and other developers to ensure smooth rollout of all products and features.
